Why this is difficult

More than a simple either-or

Parents carry primary responsibility for their children’s routines, boundaries, and behaviour, so consistent rules can make discipline clearer and prevent children from playing adults against one another. Ignoring those rules may also leave a parent feeling undermined. At the same time, grandparents often have a different, less disciplinary relationship with grandchildren, and some flexibility can create warmth, spontaneity, and a distinct family bond. The difficulty is deciding whether a grandparent’s freedom amounts to harmless indulgence or interference with parenting. The impact may depend on which rules are being relaxed, how often it happens, and whether the adults communicate respectfully.

The parents’ rules should take priority. Grandparents can be affectionate and fun without openly undoing boundaries set for the children. If they disagree, that conversation belongs between adults—not through exceptions that make discipline confusing.

Neither side needs absolute control. Core rules about safety, respect, and important routines should remain firm, while occasional treats or relaxed expectations can belong to grandparent time. The real test is whether the flexibility causes lasting disruption.

Grandparents should have meaningful freedom, not a script for every interaction. Their role is different from that of parents, and a little indulgence does not automatically destroy discipline. Parents should step in only when an important boundary is being crossed.
