Family, community, boundaries, and self-care

A dependable family member is regularly asked to organise gatherings, help with errands, and contribute to community events. They care about staying connected, but the requests are leaving little time for rest. Should they say no to the next important request even if others may feel disappointed?

Why this is difficult

More than a simple either-or

Being the person others rely on can strengthen family and community ties, especially when a request is important and people have come to expect practical support. Saying yes may preserve goodwill, prevent extra pressure from falling on someone else, and reflect a genuine desire to stay involved. At the same time, regularly organising gatherings, handling errands, and contributing to events can leave too little space for rest. Saying no to the next request may protect the person’s energy and establish more sustainable boundaries, even if others initially feel disappointed. Neither choice is free of consequences: accepting may deepen exhaustion, while declining may affect plans or relationships. The dilemma turns on how to balance immediate obligations and connection with the need for recovery and a manageable level of responsibility.
